Proud Of Our Past & Fighting For A Better Future

Colchester & District Trades Union Council Meeting

Thursday 10th September

REPORT OF MAIN DECISIONS

  1. After some discussion about the experiences of Chelmsford TUC in organising public
meetings on international issues, it was agreed that a speaker on Palestine issues
should be invited to the next Meeting. This would be arranged through contacts with
    Essex University.
  2. VESTAS - although the occupation of the VESTA plant and premises on the Isle of
Wight had come to an end, Delegates were reminded that there is still an active picket of
the site aimed at preventing the removal of plant and equipment and the continuing
support of the wider trade union and labour movement was essential.
  3. Colchester CWU members would be balloted on industrial action sometime between the
16th and 30th September. The view was expressed at the Meeting that while it was
understandable that the Delegate to Colchester TUC was extremely busy, it would be
helpful and worthwhile if he could spend a few minutes at one of the TUC meetings in
order to provide both an insight and update on the current dispute at Royal Mail.
  4. Delegates voiced appreciation at the efforts of the Regional FBU to appoint delegates to
all the District TUCs in Essex. Hopefully, a delegate would 'manifest' at Colchester TUC
    fairly soon.
  5. £20 was donated towards the cost of running a coach from Ipswich to the Burston Rally. It was encouraging that the coach was three quarters full for the event.

    Delegates Reports:
  • Unison Colchester and District General Hospital Branch. A long-standing union
rep and Delegate to Colchester TUC had recently retired and the Branch was in
the process of re-building. Laundry workers at the CDGH were not included in
the NHS national pay structure and currently were receiving only the National
    Minimum Wage rates.
  • Unite/Amicus Central Branch. Having attended the Burston Rally, the Branch
Delegate was very pleased with the event and the overall organisation and
arrangements at every level. Unite was well-represented amongst the speakers
and the 'good mood' that could be felt among rally-goers was enhanced by the
international flavour provided by the fraternal/sororal delegations from overseas.
  • Lobby of the Labour Party Conference is to take place on the 27th September at Brighton
  • Meeting agreed to support the Motion (item 8) in the quarterly report of the National Pensioners Convention Eastern Region
  • Meeting agreed to accept the invitation to 'join' the "Sustainable Energy Partnership" (SEP).
