The meeting welcomed Richard Doughty - president of the Students Union
at the University of Essex and Councillor Dave Harris.
A major part of the meeting revolved around discussing the campaigning
against the BNP. Trades Council had paid for the leaflets that were
distrbuted around the Highwoods area in the run up to the election.
Amongst the ideas that came out was to adopt an anti fascism &
anti racist statement as Chelmsford TUC had done. They had received
support from various groups and had got ther mainstrem political parties
to sign up to this. Campigning on this issue will no doubt be a feature
of our meetings in future. As a result of an appeal at the last meeting,
funds had been donated to assist campaigning, by Amicus - Colchester
Central & Unison NEMHT. I understand other donations are in the
pipeline!
Many thanks for the support from unions and the students from the
University on this important issue.
