Colchester TUC - Update - January 8th 2009 - Meeting

Bob Lambert - Chair welcomed delegates to the meeting

Speaker - We had no speaker scheduled for the meeting. Offers/suggestions please.

Campaigning -
The local Stop the War Group was planning to run a coach to London for the demonstration over Israel attacking Gaza.Contact details were given.
The council was supportive and wished the organisers success.

CAFARAP - The secretary updated the meeting on the Equality & Diversity statement. Some 30 organisations had been approached and further groups were being selected.
The signature collection id support of the E & D statement had resumed. A change in location to Eld Lane had proved more effective. Bob Lambert would be co-ordinating this and would appreciate help on thursday lunch times.

Anti BNP Campaigning. Bob had attended the meeting at Witham to discuss arrangements for a stall in the town centre there. This is now planned for 24.01.09.
Bob advised he would look to support a similar anti BNP stall being run on Saturday.

Bob Lambert also spoke about the event organised by Chelmsford TUC and Thompson in support of Venezuela and the Sixth Form College Awards evening on 18.12.08

Sarah Pigott spoke in support of Yunus Bakhsh a sacked health worker and union activist. Yunus had been sacked from his job and expelled from Unison. This was causing a great deal of concern to union activists as Yunus was well regarded
The meeting agreed to send a message of support.

Secretary's Report -
The secretary went through the correspondence received
Kevan Pugh, CWU had asked to make delegates aware of the "privatisation" of Royal Mail. An update from CWU would follow in due course.

Treasurers Report -
The current account balances were reported. Funds to support the cost of sending an observer to the TUC Womens Conference, £50 had been donated by Unite Colchester Central, which was gratefully acknowledged.
The meeting agreed to continue supporting The Children of Swaziland charity and donated £25 to Stop the War Campaign.

Alternative Oyster Feast - Pete Norfolk would look to approach Bob Crowe of RMT to attend as special guest.

Essex County Association of TUCs -
AGM 21.02.09. The secretary noted that resolutions for Trades Councils Conference would need to be agreed at our AGM and then taken to the County Association AGM.

Delegates then gave updates from their workplaces etc.

The meeting closed at 10pm.

The next meeting will be the AGM on
Thursday February 12th 2009 at 8pm at The Odd One Out, Mesea Road, Colchester
