Proud Of Our Past & Fighting For A Better Future

Resolution from
NHS Together Campaigners Conference
3rd March 2007

THIS Conference resolves to defend all NHS services in the Eastern Region, as part of the national NHS Together campaign to oppose NHS cuts, and defend and extend the basic principles of the NHS.

Accordingly, Conference resolves to establish a standing body of representatives from NHS Together, organisations and supporters, to link the various campaigns in defence of NHS provisions around the region, and to provide and promote mutual support for such campaigns.

The campaign will be founded on the following principles:-

All actual reductions in service to the community must be opposed. If cuts are made on financial grounds, the campaign will be aimed at securing the resources necessary to stop cuts;

The basic principles of the NHS will be defended, i.e. a service based on public need, financed by public funding, free at the point of use, with equality of access throughout the UK, and publicly managed and accountable;

Privatisation of NHS services will be opposed; the main aim of the private sector is to make profits, without which they cannot survive - such an ethos has no place in a public service like the NHS;

Health workers campaigning to defend their services will be supported by NHS Together; this includes campaigns to improve pay and conditions, so as to ensure a more stable and motivated workforce, which is essential for good patient care;

We will work to achieve the maximum support for the national aims of NHS Together, and particularly to make the Government change course on its policy of privatisation of NHS services. Accordingly, we will work to achieve the biggest possible turnout on national events, and support the call for a national demonstration to defend the NHS.

This conference was attended by over 100 delegates from NHS staff unions, professional organisations, local campaign groups and Trades Councils.
