Proud Of Our Past & Fighting For A Better Future

Report on Meeting - with Trish Alford. TU Studies Centre
Monday October 13th 2008

I aim to pay a visit to TU studies at least once a year, in order to discuss areas of common interest.
We looked at a number of current issues -
Firstly, I presented Trish with Framed Certificate from the Associated Union of Woodworkers & Joiners. The original of which was found in the Foresters Hall in Brightlingsea.
This had come about from Trish saying that there were not many pictures on the walls of the TU Centre.
Secondly - There was the presentation of 4 Trades Council "Limited Edition" Mugs. I told the background to how we had arranged the mugs for the Alternative Oyster Feast. This lead to discussion on the Alternative Oyster Feast.
This brought up the profile of Trades Councils, Frank the current course tutor had been involved in revitalising Medway TUC.
The profile of TUCs is a concern and it was agreed I would come and deliver a talk on Trades Councils to the students on the Employment Law course.
TUCs Public Services Not Private Profit meeting on 11.11.08 at Greenstead Community Centre was discussed. Trish offered to use contacts to see if speakers from UCU and PCS would be able to attend. Trish offered to help with publicity for the meeting.
I talked about our efforts under Anti Racism and Anti Racism Action plan and the Equality & Diversity Statement. Trish offered her support to our efforts, I left the AFARAP pack containing details of Equality & Diversity Statement and sign up sheets.
I will discuss later in the year whether Trades Council would make the award for " Special Achievement" as we did in 2007.
It was noted that TUC will from time to time bring in the surplus Trade Union magazines they receive for students to read at break times

A useful meeting which helps us all, I think.
