SERTUC - PUBLIC SERVICES COMMITTEE
Meeting - June 4th 2007 - London

The following are my notes from the meeting - for information and distribution as appropriate-

The June meeting of the committee is also the AGM. This business was dealt with very rapidly with Michael Walker of Unison being re-elected secretary and Tom Baille of GMB re-elected chair.

John Ball TUC Policy Officer advised that SERTUC were keen to have the committee more active rather than a talking shop. He put forward that the committee actively focus on topics affecting the public sector.
He came up with the suggestion that education and the growth of" Academies" (sponsored schools) - was a topic to start with as NUT had a motion to go before SERTUC and at Congress 2006 - Composite 10 dealt with the matter.
Discussion followed on the issue. Some delegates had limited knowledge on the matter and sought further information on the topic, as these schools were not being progressed in all areas.
It was agreed that -
- A speaker from a campaign group active against " Academies " be invited to address a future meeting.
- Letters of support be sent to groups campaigning against academies, in the region
- Follow up on the progress of a TUC Strategy document on the topic.
-All unions to be encouraged to campaign against academies
- Looking to see if a conference on campaigning against academies could be organized later in the year.

The topic will be on the agenda for the next meeting in September.

Following this the delegates were asked about progress in pay deals for this year. Delegates reported on the hand of the treasury being involved in the current pay round.

The meeting closed at 12.35pm
