Joe Glenton, the soldier who spoke out against the Afghanistan
war and refused to fight there, is facing a hearing for going AWOL
in Colchester. Joe had a massive victory last month when, after a
howl of popular protest, the charges of desertion (which can carry
up to 10 years imprisonment) were dropped. But he still faces the
charge of going AWOL (which can carry up to 2 years imprisonment).
It is disgusting that this is how someone who told the truth about
the war is treated, when Tony Blair who lied about the war - resulting
in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people - faced a tame enquiry
and is still at large to make obscene amounts of money pontificating
at international conferences.
Protest
We need to show that Colchester 's verdict is Joe Glenton is
not guilty but a hero. We plan to protest against the charges outside
the hearing and demonstrate the popular support for Joe's stance.
Joe's hearing is on 5th March, 9:30 at Merville Barracks near Abbey
Fields, off Butt Road .

After the hearing:
We plan to hold a public meeting about 2 weeks after the hearing
on 'War Resisters: Then and Now' alongside an exhibition of the
same title. It is intended to put Joe Glenton's resistance in context,
to show the power of mass movements in giving soldiers the courage
to speak out and celebrate the diverse strands that the Stop the
War movement is made up of, and the diversity of previous anti-war
movements.
We would be very grateful if anyone has any items/info etc they
can loan to the exhibition.
